A Guide To Security Camera Installation Skills

There are a few simple rules that will ensure that installation is proper. The first is that all video camera equipment should be on the same phase of the electrical supply.

While selecting a circuit to supply power to the equipment, use a dedicated circuit which will not have any interference of other electrical equipment.

Avoid any panel with an outside circuit, for example garden light poles receiving their power supply from the panel are often exposed to nearby lightening strikes or direct strikes. Such surges in the power supply will damage the equipment.

Security camera installation skills will also require knowledge and maintenance of UPS equipment. All electronic equipment are subject to surges, impulses, noise and other interruptions that are outside the incoming power supply requirements for normal stable operation. An on-line UPS connection may be a little expensive, but provides better protection for the security camera equipment connected on it.

The proper selection of wires and cables for the system is also part of good security camera installation skills. Shielded wire is recommended for power cables. If affordable, doubled- shielded wires should be used to give protection to equipment from lightning surges. Transmitting video signals through fiber optic is a better option, though expensive than copper.

Security camera installation skills involve proper commissioning of both the head end equipment and cameras. This means that all the video equipment gets its AC power ground from a single source, and the cameras which may be on the side of a wall, a second on the garden fence or pole, a third on a concrete pole, etc., get their power supply from other power connections.

Outdoor security camera installation skills require knowledge of copper conductors connected to a low resistance single point ground. In most cases this is expensive and not very practical as it is not possible to bind all the equipment with a large conductor.

Another option is installation of isolation transformers for all the camera power and using high performance surge suppressors for the camera at the camera power point. This option is also expensive.

The other inexpensive method is isolation of the video camera from any potential ground where it is installed, and then fitted with proper high performance surge protection devices on either ends of the cable and at the incoming power source at the camera point. This method is often found to be most cost effective.
